| NSC mark | Academic contribution |
|---|---|
| 90-100% | 8 |
| 80-89% | 7 |
| 70-79% | 6 |
| 60-69% | 5 |
| 50-59% | 4 |
| 40-49% | 3 |
| 30-39% | 0 |
| 0-29% | 0 |
For English and Mathematics, add two to the academic contribution when the mark is at least 60%. Mathematical Literacy has no bonus. Life Orientation contributes 0 below 60%, then 1, 2, 3 or 4 from 60%, 70%, 80% or 90% respectively.
English and Mathematics weighting
A high mark in English or Mathematics changes the Wits total more than the same improvement in an ordinary subject. This is why replacing a Wits result with a six-subject score can give a misleading comparison. Life Orientation belongs in the calculation, but it has its own reduced column rather than the ordinary subject scale. A strong Life Orientation result therefore helps by a smaller amount. Further Studies subjects may be relevant to the best-subject selection, so enter an eligible extra result when you have one and review the subjects included in the breakdown.
Before comparing a programme target
The subject bonus rewards the mark, not a change in the subject name. Do not label Mathematical Literacy as Mathematics to receive the extra points. Check numerate programme requirements separately from the total. Law, Education and Humanities can have different subject routes, and a route accepted for one qualification need not be accepted for another.
Worked example for Wits
Illustration only: the six academic marks are 65%, 59%, 70%, 63%, 54%, 76%, with Life Orientation at 71%. This form returns 36 points. The result uses the displayed method, not a programme admission threshold. Read the table to see each included subject and its contribution. Change one academic mark at a time to see whether it crosses a points band or changes a percentage-based total. A higher elective only displaces another subject when that other subject is not compulsory.
How to use the Wits APS calculator
Start with one consistent set of school results for Wits University. Enter six academic percentages, choose the correct subject names and identify each language level. Add further eligible academic subjects only if you actually completed them. Mark programme-required subjects so they remain in the selected set. Enter Life Orientation in its own field. Select Calculate and check the included-subject column before reading the headline. Copy or print the result if you want a record for your application planning.
Planning your Wits application
Use the full qualification name when making a Wits shortlist, and record the intake alongside it. Do not copy an application fee, closing date or minimum from a different intake. A page about admission points does not establish that applications are open. Keep the application confirmation, submitted school results and any programme-specific documents together. If a selection condition is unclear, resolve that point before treating a score comparison as a completed application check.
