Mathematics routes can change the target

UJ applicants should distinguish the calculation of a score from the choice of a programme threshold. Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy can both produce achievement ratings, but some qualifications set different APS targets for the two routes. Others require Mathematics and do not accept Mathematical Literacy. The form preserves the subject name so the arithmetic does not imply that the routes are interchangeable.

Before comparing a programme target

For law-related study, identify whether you mean a BA Law, BCom Law or the four-year LLB. These are different qualifications, and a similar title is not enough to identify the entry rules. In the result table, confirm the six academic subjects used and leave Life Orientation out. Read the law guide for the checklist before comparing any programme target.

Worked example for UJ

Illustration only: the six academic marks are 68%, 62%, 67%, 66%, 57%, 73%, with Life Orientation at 74%. This form returns 30 points. The result uses the displayed method, not a programme admission threshold. Read the table to see each included subject and its contribution. Change one academic mark at a time to see whether it crosses a points band or changes a percentage-based total. A higher elective only displaces another subject when that other subject is not compulsory.

How to use the UJ APS calculator

Start with one consistent set of school results for University of Johannesburg. Enter six academic percentages, choose the correct subject names and identify each language level. Add further eligible academic subjects only if you actually completed them. Mark programme-required subjects so they remain in the selected set. Enter Life Orientation in its own field. Select Calculate and check the included-subject column before reading the headline. Copy or print the result if you want a record for your application planning.

Planning your UJ application

Use the full qualification name when making a UJ shortlist, and record the intake alongside it. Do not copy an application fee, closing date or minimum from a different intake. A page about admission points does not establish that applications are open. Keep the application confirmation, submitted school results and any programme-specific documents together. If a selection condition is unclear, resolve that point before treating a score comparison as a completed application check.
