Keep the subject requirement beside the APS

The University of Pretoria result is a points total rather than an average percentage. A subject mark moves the total only when it crosses an achievement band. The same point total can therefore represent quite different profiles: one learner may have stronger languages, another stronger Mathematics. When considering a UP qualification, record the required language level and mathematics route beside the total instead of using APS as the only test.

Before comparing a programme target

Use the exact qualification and campus description when comparing requirements. A published minimum is a threshold for consideration, while ranking and available places can still affect selection. Conditional school-leaver assessment and the later final NSC assessment are different stages. Recalculate with final results rather than carrying a provisional total forward unchanged.

Worked example for UP

Illustration only: the six academic marks are 67%, 61%, 68%, 65%, 56%, 74%, with Life Orientation at 73%. This form returns 30 points. The result uses the displayed method, not a programme admission threshold. Read the table to see each included subject and its contribution. Change one academic mark at a time to see whether it crosses a points band or changes a percentage-based total. A higher elective only displaces another subject when that other subject is not compulsory.

How to use the UP APS calculator

Start with one consistent set of school results for University of Pretoria. Enter six academic percentages, choose the correct subject names and identify each language level. Add further eligible academic subjects only if you actually completed them. Mark programme-required subjects so they remain in the selected set. Enter Life Orientation in its own field. Select Calculate and check the included-subject column before reading the headline. Copy or print the result if you want a record for your application planning.

Planning your UP application

Use the full qualification name when making a UP shortlist, and record the intake alongside it. Do not copy an application fee, closing date or minimum from a different intake. A page about admission points does not establish that applications are open. Keep the application confirmation, submitted school results and any programme-specific documents together. If a selection condition is unclear, resolve that point before treating a score comparison as a completed application check.
