Technical qualifications need the right subject route
For a technology qualification, begin with the exact diploma or degree and the mathematics subject named in its requirements. A general points estimate cannot decide whether Technical Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy is accepted. Keep those subject names visible when building your application checklist rather than using a stronger mark from an unrelated subject as a replacement.
Before comparing a programme target
Use the subject table as a record of your entered percentages. Flag a compulsory academic subject before adding extra electives. The calculator retains flagged subjects and fills the remaining spaces with higher eligible marks, but this selection is a planning convention rather than a verified MUT rule. If your school qualification is not the NSC, a separate conversion may be needed.
Worked example for MUT
Illustration only: the six academic marks are 73%, 65%, 70%, 65%, 57%, 69%, with Life Orientation at 72%. This form returns 31 points. The result uses the displayed method, not a programme admission threshold. Read the table to see each included subject and its contribution. Change one academic mark at a time to see whether it crosses a points band or changes a percentage-based total. A higher elective only displaces another subject when that other subject is not compulsory.
How to use the MUT APS calculator
Start with one consistent set of school results for Mangosuthu University of Technology. Enter six academic percentages, choose the correct subject names and identify each language level. Add further eligible academic subjects only if you actually completed them. Mark programme-required subjects so they remain in the selected set. Enter Life Orientation in its own field. Select Calculate and check the included-subject column before reading the headline. Copy or print the result if you want a record for your application planning.
Planning your MUT application
Use the full qualification name when making a MUT shortlist, and record the intake alongside it. Do not copy an application fee, closing date or minimum from a different intake. A page about admission points does not establish that applications are open. Keep the application confirmation, submitted school results and any programme-specific documents together. If a selection condition is unclear, resolve that point before treating a score comparison as a completed application check.
| Example subject | Mark | Value used before final conversion |
|---|---|---|

| Isixhosa | 65% | 5 |

| Life Sciences | 57% | 4 |
| Geography | 69% | 5 |
| Life Orientation | 72% | 0 |
Example result: 31 points. This is an illustration, not an entry requirement.
