Programme selection can extend beyond marks

A DUT applicant should separate the academic entry conditions from any further selection process stated for the course. A portfolio, interview or other assessment, where required, is not represented by a general APS total. This form helps organise matric percentages but does not recreate every department assessment or assign a programme-specific offer category.

Before comparing a programme target

Use the subject table as a record of your entered percentages. Flag a compulsory academic subject before adding extra electives. The calculator retains flagged subjects and fills the remaining spaces with higher eligible marks, but this selection is a planning convention rather than a verified DUT rule. If your school qualification is not the NSC, a separate conversion may be needed.

Worked example for DUT

Illustration only: the six academic marks are 64%, 66%, 69%, 66%, 58%, 68%, with Life Orientation at 73%. This form returns 29 points. The result uses the displayed method, not a programme admission threshold. Read the table to see each included subject and its contribution. Change one academic mark at a time to see whether it crosses a points band or changes a percentage-based total. A higher elective only displaces another subject when that other subject is not compulsory.

How to use the DUT APS calculator

Start with one consistent set of school results for Durban University of Technology. Enter six academic percentages, choose the correct subject names and identify each language level. Add further eligible academic subjects only if you actually completed them. Mark programme-required subjects so they remain in the selected set. Enter Life Orientation in its own field. Select Calculate and check the included-subject column before reading the headline. Copy or print the result if you want a record for your application planning.

Planning your DUT application

Use the full qualification name when making a DUT shortlist, and record the intake alongside it. Do not copy an application fee, closing date or minimum from a different intake. A page about admission points does not establish that applications are open. Keep the application confirmation, submitted school results and any programme-specific documents together. If a selection condition is unclear, resolve that point before treating a score comparison as a completed application check.
