Quick answer

Multiply the net paving area by the selected product’s pavers per m², then add one allowance for cuts and breakage. Round up the paver count and any full pallets. For shaped interlocking pavers, use the manufacturer’s installed coverage rather than treating the outline as a simple rectangle.

How it works

Use this free paving bricks calculator for South Africa to estimate pavers for a driveway, patio or path. Enter a measured area in m² or rectangular dimensions, confirm the product coverage and add one cutting allowance. The result shows whole pavers, optional full pallets and installed bedding volume.

Formula

Pavers = net paving area × supplier units per m² × (1 + waste ÷ 100), rounded up, then rounded to full packs when requested.

Assumptions and common mistakes

Check units, input values and the method before relying on an estimate. Review the existing tool notes and official sources below.

Formula

Pavers = net paving area × supplier units per m² × (1 + waste ÷ 100), rounded up, then rounded to full packs when requested.

How to use the paving bricks calculator

Choose measured area when you already know the total in m². Otherwise enter the number of identical rectangles, their length and width. Add the measured areas of unequal sections before using area mode. Deduct untiled islands or other unpaved surfaces once across the whole project. Do not deduct an area already excluded from your measurement.

Paving calculation formulas

Net area = gross area − unpaved deductions. Raw pavers = net area × installed pavers per m². Required pavers = raw pavers × (1 + waste/100), rounded up. If buying full packs, divide the required quantity by pavers per pack and round up again. Waste is applied before the first rounding.

Interlocking paving bricks calculator

Choose supplier coverage for shaped or interlocking pavers. The starting value of 50 pavers/m² is an editable example, not a universal rate. Installed coverage can include the intended joint arrangement. Do not add a second gap allowance to an already published laying rate. Rectangular dimensions mode is a geometric alternative for plain rectangular units only.

Worked example: driveway quantity

For an 8 m × 4 m driveway, gross area is 32 m². With no deductions, example coverage of 50 pavers/m² and 7.5% waste, the requirement is 1,720 pavers. If your quoted packs contain 500, buy four packs supplying 2,000 pavers. The pack count is hypothetical; use your actual quote.

Paving bricks calculator Cashbuild comparisons

99tools is independent and is not the Cashbuild calculator. For a Cashbuild comparison, match the exact paver, net area, waste and purchase unit. Confirm installed pavers/m² and pack quantity with the selected store or manufacturer. A 200 × 100 × 60 mm product description gives dimensions, but does not establish a universal pallet count or current price.

Thickness, bedding and perimeter

Paver thickness does not change coverage when top-face geometry and laying arrangement are unchanged. It still matters for suitability. Bedding volume is net area × specified depth in metres, not loose delivery volume. In rectangle mode, the perimeter sums all rectangle boundaries, including shared boundaries. Area-only mode cannot determine a perimeter. Measure actual edge restraints separately.

Before you order

The example waste and bedding depth are editable planning inputs, not a paving design specification. Confirm base preparation, drainage, load suitability, edge restraints, jointing material, colour batch, returns and delivery with your installer and supplier. The estimate excludes sub-base quantities, jointing sand, kerbs, labour, live prices and structural design.

Frequently asked questions

How many paving bricks do I need per m²?

Use the installed coverage for your selected product. A 200 × 100 mm rectangle with no additional gap gives 50 units/m² geometrically, but shaped products and joint arrangements can differ.

Can I use this as an interlocking paving bricks calculator?

Yes. Select supplier coverage and enter the manufacturer’s installed pavers per m². Do not calculate a shaped interlocker from its rectangular bounding dimensions.

Is this the Cashbuild paving bricks calculator?

No. This is an independent 99tools calculator. You can enter product coverage and pack quantities from a Cashbuild quote or another supplier.

How many paving bricks are in a pallet?

There is no universal pallet quantity. Enter the count on the exact product quote, or enter zero for individual-unit purchasing.

Does the calculator include sand and installation costs?

It shows installed bedding volume at your entered depth. It does not calculate loose sand delivery, jointing sand, installation charges or a complete paving budget.
