How to Use the Holiday Savings Goal Calculator

Without interest, contribution = (adjusted goal − savings) ÷ complete saving periods, floored at zero. With interest, use the future value of savings and an end-of-period annuity. Adjusted goal = budget × (1 + total price rise ÷ 100) × (1 + contingency ÷ 100).

How to use the holiday savings goal calculator

Enter your holiday goal and existing savings. Choose months or the payment deadline, then contribution frequency. Leave interest at zero if unsure. Enter any total price rise before payment and contingency. Compare the result with three more or fewer months.

Worked example (illustration only)

A R24 000 goal in 8 months with R4 000 saved and no interest or adjustments requires R2 500 each month. R20 000 ÷ 8 = R2 500. Example only.

What the result includes

Interest assumes a nominal annual rate divided by frequency and contributions at the end of complete periods. The deadline should be when bookings must be paid, not necessarily departure. Short date windows with no complete contribution period cannot produce a schedule.

Keep the goal realistic

Use the Travel Budget calculator to include transport, accommodation, baggage and spending. Savings progress uses current savings divided by the adjusted goal. Bank fees, tax and changing interest are not included.

Savings account access

Check withdrawal access, fees and the provider’s current rate before choosing where to save. No bank product, return or savings rate is recommended or pre-filled.
