How to Build a Realistic Road Trip Budget
Fuel = one-way km × journey multiplier ÷ 100 × L/100 km × price. Subtotal = fuel + whole-trip tolls + nights × rooms × room rate + people × days × food rate + activities + other costs. Total = subtotal × (1 + contingency ÷ 100).

Worked example (illustration only)
500 km one way, return, 8 L/100 km and R20/litre gives R1 600 fuel. Add R600 tolls, R2 400 accommodation, R1 800 food (2 people × 3 days × R300), R500 activities and R300 other: R7 200 subtotal. A 10% buffer makes R7 920, or R3 960 each. All prices are examples.
Check the inputs
Enter one-way distance and select return if needed. Enter the total tolls for the whole trip once. Days and nights are independent. Enter rooms and price per room-night, travellers, food per person-day and other categories.
What to check before relying on the result
Return doubles distance and fuel, but does not double a toll amount already entered as a whole-trip total. Room rates are multiplied by rooms and nights. Contingency applies once to the complete subtotal.
Avoid double-counting
Keep tolls out of other costs when entered in the toll field. Reduce your food budget if meals are already included in a stay. Use separate days and nights for overnight driving or stays lasting several days.
