Quick answer

Measure the surface, subtract untiled openings, add one waste allowance and divide by the product coverage. Round the purchase up to complete boxes. Mosaic quantities count sheets, not individual chips.

How it works

Calculate floor, wall or mosaic quantities in m² or square feet. Check waste, tiles, sheets and full boxes using your product coverage. This independent planning tool uses your measurements and product details.

Formula

Net area = measured area − deductions; boxes = round up(net area × (1 + waste/100) ÷ labelled box coverage).

Assumptions and common mistakes

Check units, input values and the method before relying on an estimate. Review the existing tool notes and official sources below.

Formula

Net area = measured area − deductions; boxes = round up(net area × (1 + waste/100) ÷ labelled box coverage).

How to measure

Use length × width for a rectangular floor or wall. For walls, width means tiled height. Split irregular surfaces into rectangles, calculate each separately and combine net areas. Only deduct surfaces that will actually remain untiled.

Choose the right coverage

For the most direct purchase estimate, use labelled m² per box. Alternatively use tile length and width in mm and units per box. For mosaic sheets, enter the sheet dimensions and sheets per box, not chip dimensions. Nominal face calculations ignore grout joints; manufacturer coverage takes precedence.

Worked example

A 20 m² floor with 10% waste needs 22 m² of nominal coverage. At 1.44 m² per box, this is 16 boxes supplying 23.04 m². With four 600 × 600 mm tiles per box, the purchase contains 64 tiles.

Before ordering

Confirm batch, shade, calibre, stock, returns and spares before purchase. Plan cuts with the installer. Adhesive, grout, waterproofing, trim, labour and delivery are excluded. A tile calculator app cannot replace a measured layout.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate tiles per square metre?

Divide 1 by the coverage of one tile in square metres. A 600 × 600 mm tile has a nominal face area of 0.36 m². Use supplier coverage when available, add your chosen waste once, then round up whole boxes.

Does the calculator add waste automatically for a pattern?

No. Enter one allowance agreed with your tiler for the actual layout, cuts and breakage. The example 10% is editable and is not a guarantee for every job.

Is this the CTM tile calculator?

No. 99tools is independent. Use the exact product label or quote for tiles per box and square metres per box, including products bought from CTM.

Can I use square feet?

Yes. Select feet for surface dimensions and deductions. One square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m². Product dimensions remain in millimetres and box coverage in m².
