Calculate your result
Quick answer
Calculate the finished concrete volume from your project measurements and apply one allowance. Divide required litres by the selected complete premix’s finished litres per bag, round up full bags and then any full packs. A 40 kg label is mass, not litres. Confirm yield and intended use on the exact product before ordering.
How it works
Use this Premix Concrete Calculator for South Africa to estimate complete concrete bags from measured project dimensions. Enter the selected product’s finished yield, then check whole bags, packs and optional coverage at a specified thickness. Add your quoted bag price and delivery for a material budget. Bag mass does not determine finished concrete volume.
Formula
Premix bags = required finished concrete volume in litres ÷ finished yield per bag, rounded up. Apply any allowance once before converting volume to bags.
Assumptions and common mistakes
Check units, input values and the method before relying on an estimate. Review the existing tool notes and official sources below.
Formula
Premix bags = required finished concrete volume in litres ÷ finished yield per bag, rounded up. Apply any allowance once before converting volume to bags.
| Quantity | Formula |
|---|---|
| Full bags | Required finished litres ÷ declared litres per bag, rounded up |
| Nominal bags per m³ | 1000 ÷ declared litres per bag |
| Coverage per bag | Finished bag m³ ÷ specified depth in metres |
| Nominal material rate per m³ | Bag price ÷ finished bag m³ |
How to use the Premix Concrete Calculator
Measure each section with its actual units and specified depth. Add only extra volume not already counted, subtract measured volume deductions and apply one allowance. Enter the complete product’s declared finished mixed yield in litres per bag. The yield field stays blank until you supply it; neither retailer name nor bag mass identifies that value.
What is premix concrete?
For this calculator, premix means a complete dry concrete product with its required cement and aggregates, prepared for mixing according to its instructions. Products described as building mix, concrete blend, mortar, screed or aggregate may have different ingredients and uses. Check whether cement or other materials still need to be added before treating a bag as complete concrete.
40 kg premix concrete volume
A 40 kg package does not automatically make 40 litres of concrete. Finished yield depends on the actual formulation and mixing instructions. Enter a declared m³ yield in litres by multiplying by 1,000. Optional dry bag mass is used only for a handling-mass total and never changes the volume or bag count.
Worked bag and pack example
A 2 m × 1 m section at an illustrative 100 mm depth contains 0.2 m³. With 5% allowance, the requirement is 210 litres. A hypothetical yield of 20 litres per bag needs 11 full bags. If only full packs of 10 are purchased, buy 20 bags supplying 400 litres. Confirm actual pack terms; these figures are arithmetic examples, not a product default.
How many bags per m³ or cubic yard?
Nominal bags per m³ = 1,000 ÷ finished litres per bag, before extra allowance. Round up when purchasing for that volume. A cubic yard is about 0.764555 m³; the tool also shows whole bags for one cubic yard without an extra allowance. Do not add another percentage when a transferred volume already includes it.
How much area does a bag cover?
Enter the specified coverage depth to see area per bag and nominal area from the purchase. Area = finished volume ÷ depth in metres. A hypothetical 20 litre yield at 100 mm depth covers 0.2 m². This is geometric coverage, not a recommendation on slab thickness or product suitability.
Premix concrete price and cost per m³
The quoted bag cost uses purchased whole bags after any pack rounding; delivery adds once. The equivalent bag-material rate per m³ uses bag price divided by finished yield in m³. It excludes delivery, labour, losses and pack effects and is not a ready-mix truck quote. Use consistent VAT treatment and current product prices.
Builders, local availability and product choice
99tools is independent of Builders and other suppliers. Match exact contents, intended use, yield, bag mass, pack size and quote date. The site does not load live branch stock, prices near you or trailer rental. Overseas places and business names in search results are not South African supply options by default.
Mixing, setting and curing
Follow the current product instructions for water, mixing, placing, working time, protection and curing. Added water is not finished yield. Do not add water to extend a batch beyond the product instructions. Initial set, strength development and drying are different; there is no universal loading or finish-ready time based only on bag size.

Frequently asked questions
How many bags of premix concrete do I need?
Divide the required finished litres, including any agreed allowance once, by the actual finished litres per bag. Round up full bags and any required packs.
How much concrete does a 40 kg premix bag make?
Use the exact product’s declared finished yield. A 40 kg mass does not establish a universal number of litres or identify a complete concrete product.
How many bags of premix concrete make one m³?
Calculate 1,000 ÷ finished litres per bag and round up for purchasing, adding any required allowance only once. At a hypothetical 20 litres per bag, one m³ needs 50 bags before allowance.
How much area does one premix bag cover?
Divide its finished volume by the specified depth in metres. Coverage changes with thickness; the calculator does not choose a suitable slab depth.
How much does premix concrete cost per m³?
The equivalent material rate is your bag price divided by finished m³ per bag. It excludes delivery and installation and is not a live ready-mix price.
Is a Builders building mix automatically complete concrete?
No. Check the exact product contents and instructions. Cement, aggregate-only blends, mortar, screed and complete concrete premix are not interchangeable.
How long does premix concrete take to set?
Follow the selected product’s instructions and site conditions. Setting, curing, strength gain and drying are different; a single bag weight cannot establish a universal waiting time.
