Calculate your result
Quick answer
At an illustrative 15 mm total thickness, 20 m² is 20 × 0.015 = 0.3 m³ of geometric plaster layer before allowance. Cement, sand or complete product bags need the specified mix or declared product consumption; area alone does not give a universal bag count.
How it works
Use the Plaster Calculator South Africa to estimate wall area and material purchases. Choose site-mixed cement and sand, or a complete bagged plaster using its declared coverage. Enter openings, matching faces, average thickness and one allowance, then check full bags and optional quoted costs.
Formula
Net wall area = (identical walls × length × height − total one-face openings) × matching faces. Layer volume = net m² × thickness in mm ÷ 1000. Apply one allowance, then use the entered site-mix assumptions or exact product consumption and round to purchase units.
Assumptions and common mistakes
Check units, input values and the method before relying on an estimate. Review the existing tool notes and official sources below.
Formula
Net wall area = (identical walls × length × height − total one-face openings) × matching faces. Layer volume = net m² × thickness in mm ÷ 1000. Apply one allowance, then use the entered site-mix assumptions or exact product consumption and round to purchase units.
| Method | Calculation basis |
|---|---|
| Wall area | Subtract total one-face openings, then multiply matching faces |
| Geometric layer | Net m² × specified mm ÷ 1000 |
| Site-mix bags | Adjusted volume × dry factor × cement fraction × bulk density ÷ bag kg |
| Complete product | Adjusted area ÷ labelled m²/bag OR adjusted area × kg/m² ÷ kg/bag |
| Purchase | Round whole bags, then full product packs if entered |
How to use the wall plaster calculator
Choose identical wall elevations or a known net plaster area. For wall elevations, enter length, height and count, then the total openings across all those elevations on one face. The tool subtracts openings before multiplying by one or two matching faces. Use known net area when faces differ or when the total already includes every surface. Do not multiply a known net area by faces again.
Thickness, coats and uneven walls
Enter the specified average thickness of the coat or compatible same-mix layers included in this calculation. Thickness is in millimetres. Uneven backgrounds, reveals, returns, soffits and repairs may add area or material that a simple elevation misses. Measure them separately. Different basecoats, finishing plasters or thicknesses need separate calculations using the correct specification for each.
Cement sand plaster calculator
Site-mix mode calculates geometric layer volume, applies one material allowance, then multiplies by the entered dry-material factor. It splits that dry bulk volume by cement:sand parts and converts cement volume using the entered loose bulk density. These are adjustable estimating assumptions, not a plaster recipe or verified yield for every sand. The defaults 1:4, 1.33 and 1440 kg/m³ are arithmetic examples. Confirm mix, sand condition, bulk-volume basis and practical yield for the job.
How much cement and sand per m²?
There is no single amount independent of thickness and mix. As an arithmetic example, 20 m² at 15 mm gives 0.3 m³. With 10% allowance, factor 1.33, 1:4 cement:sand and cement bulk density 1440 kg/m³, the model gives 126.4032 kg cement and 0.35112 m³ sand. Three 50 kg cement bags cover the calculated mass. This example does not establish a suitable plaster mix or a loose-sand delivery quantity.
Gypsum, lime and complete product bags
Choose complete product mode and enter either labelled m² per bag or dry kg/m² with the bag mass, all at the entered thickness and coat system. The tool does not automatically rescale coverage when thickness changes. Confirm the new coverage with the manufacturer. A complete gypsum or lime product is not a cement bag with sand added. Site-mixed lime blends with extra binder components are outside the two-part cement:sand model.
External plaster and pool plaster
Choose a system explicitly suitable for its exposure and background. An interior gypsum plaster is not automatically an external render or pool finish. For pools, use the actual surface area of walls, floor, steps and curves plus the specific pool product’s declared consumption. This tool does not design pool geometry, waterproofing, reinforcement, application or start-up. Obtain the specified system and experienced application advice.
Plaster costs and supplier comparisons
Optional quotes price full purchased cement or product bags, site-mix sand on the same bulk-volume basis, net-area labour, delivery and other quoted work. Use one VAT basis; no extra VAT is added. Zero lines remain unpriced. 99tools is independent of PPC and Cashbuild. Match thickness, faces, deductions, mix, product coverage and rounding before comparing their tools or quotes.

Calculate a result and choose Download CSV for Excel. The file includes area, thickness, allowance, applicable material quantities and entered costs, using plain numeric values and units. It is a result snapshot, not an Excel workbook with live formulas. Recalculate and download again after changing the inputs. Copy and print options are also available.

Frequently asked questions
How much plaster do I need per m²?
Multiply the area by specified thickness for geometric layer volume. Cement-and-sand quantities then need confirmed mix assumptions; complete product bags need their exact coverage at that thickness.
Do I count both sides of a brick wall?
Only when both matching faces will be plastered. In wall mode, openings are entered across one face before the selected face multiplier. Known net area must already include all required faces.
Does the calculator use a universal plaster mix ratio?
No. Site-mix defaults are editable arithmetic examples. Confirm the specified cement, sand, ratio, volume assumptions and yield for the job.
Can I calculate gypsum or lime plaster?
Use complete product mode with the exact declared consumption and bag size. It does not design a gypsum recipe or a site-mixed lime blend.
Can I calculate external or pool plaster?
Yes, for quantity planning with the correctly specified system and actual surface area. Product suitability, waterproofing and application are separate requirements.
Is this the PPC or Cashbuild plaster calculator?
No. 99tools is independent. Compare the same area, thickness, product or mix assumptions, allowance and bag rounding.
Can I download the plaster result for Excel?
Yes. The CSV opens in spreadsheet software and contains a result snapshot. It is not a formula-based Excel workbook.
