Calculate your result
Quick answer
One 20 m straight run at a specified maximum 2.5 m post-centre interval gives eight estimated bays and nine post positions. Two independent such runs give 18 positions; if exactly one endpoint is the same physical post, deduct one duplicate for 17. These are layout quantities, not post or footing specifications.
How it works
Plan fence quantities from separate straight runs, the specified post-centre spacing and actual product dimensions. Choose panel, mesh-roll or picket infill, then add verified shared endpoints, scheduled extras and current quotes.
Formula
Bays per run = ceil(run length ÷ specified maximum post-centre interval). Independent post positions = sum((bays + 1) × run count). Deduct verified shared endpoint duplicates and add separately scheduled extra posts.
Assumptions and common mistakes
Check units, input values and the method before relying on an estimate. Review the existing tool notes and official sources below.
Material quantity formula
Bays per run = ceil(run length ÷ specified maximum post-centre interval). Independent post positions = sum((bays + 1) × run count). Deduct verified shared endpoint duplicates and add separately scheduled extra posts.
| Quantity | Basis |
|---|---|
| Fence bays | Round each fenced run separately using the specified interval |
| Posts | Independent positions minus verified endpoint duplicates plus scheduled extras |
| Panel infill | Whole panels per estimated bay, then entered spares |
| Mesh rolls | Whole usable-coverage rolls for each independent run |
| Pickets | Uncut pickets and equal edge/internal gaps within each estimated clear bay |
| Footing concrete | Entered post count × specified net litres, with separate allowance |
How to measure fence runs and gate openings
Enter separate straight fenced runs between defined end, corner or gate-post positions, measured on the planned post-centre basis. Gate openings are excluded from these run lengths; do not subtract them again. Split at corners, gates and changes of system rather than entering one perimeter with a single total gate deduction. A repeat count means identical independent runs. Confirm the boundary, levels, access and layout before ordering. The tool does not locate a legal boundary or resolve a sloping site from a plan length.
Fence bays, posts and shared endpoints
For each straight run, bays = ceil(run length ÷ specified maximum post-centre interval), and independent post positions = bays + 1. The calculator divides that run into equal estimated bays; actual module and fixing details still govern. Independent runs count their own endpoints. If two endpoints use the very same physical post, deduct one duplicate; three runs sharing one post produce two duplicates. Enter only duplicates verified on the plan. A gate opening does not make its two gate posts one shared endpoint.
Gate posts, corners and additional posts
Count gate or corner posts already serving as run endpoints once, not again as additional posts. Use additional scheduled posts only for positions outside the calculated runs, such as separately detailed gate or bracing posts. Position count does not specify the post type: terminals, corners, line posts, gate supports and braces can differ. Post costs therefore use a separately quoted total for the actual post schedule rather than multiplying every position by one assumed standard-post price. No gate support, wind load or foundation design is generated.
Panel and palisade fence material calculator
Panel mode estimates one full panel per planned bay, followed by an explicitly entered spare allowance. The post-centre interval must correspond to the selected panel system, clamps and post geometry; it is not automatically the panel face width. A short final bay may require an approved cut, a special module or a revised layout. A quantity result does not establish that a panel can be cut or a connection adjusted. Palisade sections, welded panels and vinyl panel products have different details, so use the exact system specification.
Chain link and wire mesh rolls
Roll mode rounds each run independently using the entered usable coverage length of one roll and the chosen infill allowance. Repeat counts multiply those per-run purchases. No cross-run offcut reuse is assumed. Check roll height, mesh aperture, wire diameter, coating, joining, tensioning and termination requirements for the intended use. Usable coverage can differ from nominal roll length. This mode does not infer strainers, ties, rails or braces. Optional horizontal-wire take-off is a separate linear quantity, not a count of wire reels or an electric fence design.
Wood and vinyl picket fence material calculator
Picket mode uses the estimated equal bay clear width after subtracting the entered total post/fitting-width allowance per bay. It places uncut pickets with equal gaps at both edges and between pickets, all no greater than the entered maximum. Count per bay = max(1, ceil((clear width − maximum gap)/(picket width + maximum gap))). The result also checks that the uncut pickets fit. An impossible zero-gap or narrow-bay combination is rejected rather than hidden. Actual bay clearances, openings, fixings and allowable layout must be checked before ordering.
Footing concrete and horizontal wire
Optional concrete is a take-off for the entered count of posts receiving one already specified net footing volume. It does not assign that volume to every post or design hole dimensions. Net concrete litres must account for the actual occupied post volume and footing detail. A separate concrete allowance is explicit. Optional horizontal wire is fenced run length × entered strand count, with its own allowance. Terminations, tensioning and reel-cutting plans remain separate; gate gaps are not automatically bridged by that quantity.
Fence material prices and supplier comparisons
Infill prices use purchased full panels, mesh rolls or picket packs according to the selected mode. Enter separate quoted totals for the actual post types, gate assemblies, optional wire, other rails or fixings, installation and delivery. Concrete pricing uses its allowance-adjusted scheduled m³. Use one VAT basis and avoid repeating included components. Zero cost lines remain unpriced, and no current supplier prices or nearby stock are invented. Compare like specifications and complete scope when requesting quotes from a fence material supplier.
Which fence material is best or cheapest?
The appropriate material depends on privacy, security, exposure, maintenance, appearance and the purpose of the barrier. Timber, coated steel, chain link, palisade, vinyl and other plastic fencing have different product and support requirements. Privacy infill can increase wind loading; a visual screen is not proof of security performance. For a dog fence, consider the particular animal, openings, climbing and digging risks without relying on one universal best material. A silt fence is an erosion-control product, not an interchangeable security fence. Inspect used materials for condition and compatibility.
Electric, security and pool fencing
Use a competent specialist for electric fencing, including the energizer, earthing, clearances, signs, gate details and applicable installation certification. The optional strand length does not specify or approve any of those components. Pool barriers need the applicable national and local requirements checked for the complete barrier and gate arrangement. Ordinary garden or security fencing is not automatically a compliant pool barrier. This estimator provides quantities and entered costs only; it does not certify electrical, pool, anti-climb or structural performance.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate fence material?
Split the layout into straight fenced runs, use the selected system’s post-centre interval, then estimate posts and the chosen panel, roll or picket infill.
Should gate widths be subtracted?
Enter run lengths that already exclude gate openings. Do not deduct them again. Gate posts and shared endpoints need the actual plan checked.
How do I avoid counting corner posts twice?
Independent runs include their own endpoints. Deduct one verified duplicate for each extra reference to the same physical endpoint post.
Can I estimate chain link rolls?
Yes. Roll mode uses usable coverage and rounds each run separately. Height, joins, tensioning and accessories remain product-specific.
How are pickets spaced?
The model uses equal clear gaps at both bay edges and between uncut pickets, no greater than your entered maximum. It rejects combinations that do not fit.
Does every post use the same concrete?
Not necessarily. Enter only the count of posts assigned the specified net footing volume; the calculator does not design foundations.
Does the wire quantity design an electric fence?
No. It is a separate linear take-off only. Electrical components, safety and certification require the appropriate specialist and specification.
What is the cheapest fence material?
There is no universal answer. Compare current quotes for the same purpose, height, product specification, posts, gates, accessories and installation scope.
Can any garden fence be used for a pool?
No automatic approval is given. The complete pool barrier and gate arrangement must meet the applicable requirements.
Does the calculator include live fence prices?
No. Costs use entered quotes. Zero price lines remain unpriced and no extra VAT is added.
